Gerding Theater at the Armory

July 13–26
On the Main Stage

Produced by Associate Artistic Director Rose Riordan

JAW: A Playwrights Festival is Portland Center Stage's developmental festival of new work for the stage. For two crazy weeks – from July 13—26 – JAW takes over the Armory, inside and out. As always, we'll present spanking new works in progress that will explode your expectations of what live performance can do.

Admission is free, free, free. But you can't reserve your spot; all seats are first come, first served. Just be there and be open to some of the most boundary–crossing, genre–busting work in America today. Your presence makes it all happen.

Events and Activities

Made in Oregon ( July 13 – 16): Workshop readings from Portland's finest playwrights.

Workshop Readings (July 24 – 26 at 4:00pm and 8:00pm): One week of down and dirty, hardscrabble rehearsals later, we're ready to show you the razor's edge of new American playwriting. A curtain raiser precedes most readings, compliments of our Promising Playwrights (local high school playwrights who come out of our Visions & Voices program).

Community Artist Labs: Artists from across the nation conduct Labs for our local community. Topics range from playwriting, directing, and the biz. Admission is free, but in order to maintain a high level of quality, attendance for each Lab is very limited and is determined by random lottery.

Theater Fair (July 25, 1 – 4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m.) All Portland-area theater companies and audiences are invited to this popular event. Pick up season brochures, chat with theater folk new and familiar, and drop your name in the raffle jar for the numerous ticket giveaways. And while you're at it, be sure to visit...

Devise & Conquer: Site–specific performance pieces spill out of the Armory and into its environs, with new pieces created especially for JAW.

JAW Happy Hour Lounge (6–8 p.m., July 24 – 26) Stick around between the mainstage readings for entertainment by local musicians, performers and theater companies. A laid back, low key, lounge experience designed to fuel you up and chill you out between the afternoon and evening readings. A full menu from the Armory Cafe available, including deli sandwiches, soup, salad, baked goods, espresso drinks, tea and soda. Our lobby bar will offer special prices on beer, wine and cocktails.

JAW 2009 selections announced

02 June 2009

Associate Artistic Director Rose Riordan has just released the official selections for our 2009 JAW: A Playwright's Festival. I'm very excited, both by the caliber of playwright this year's JAW has attracted and the breadth of plays, ranging from the anthropomorphic to the existential to the just plain hilarious. The core weekend will be Friday...

Reality Rockstars

02 June 2009 & Posted by Natalie Gilmore

Let me start off by saying, I'm not embarrassed to say that Adam Lambert is my American Idol. High–brow theatre folk and rock purists, feel free to throw your rotten tomatoes at me now. If you've watched any of the season (Which you must have, at least once, since they don't get those high ratings if every single one of you is only watching OPB) you have to admit that Adam is quite the showstopper. And there's really nothing I like more than a guy in eyeliner who can command the stage.
